Book excerpt: Since the first reports of soil site index studies in the South there has been a great deal of interest in extending this type of information to other areas. This is particularly true where there have been recent expansions in pulping capacity and where industry is actively purchasing open lands or brush lands for reforestation. For most of such areas there is no well developed productivity index for the various species of pine, and soil analysis seems to be the only way to determine potential yield.
