Book excerpt: Parthenium weed is a major pest plant in Queensland and has the potential to spread throughout vast areas of Australia. It causes serious economic, environmental and health problems in rural areas of Queensland with the potential for these problems to increase as infestations expand into more populated areas. Fire is an important part of the ecology of the Australian landscape and is commonly used by land managers in northern Australia for pasture management and woody weed control. Current management recommendations discourage burning of native pastures infested with parthenium even though burning has not been shown to promote parthenium density in native pastures.
