Book excerpt: After Mohamed Bouazizi, a 26-year old Tunisian citizen, set himself on fire on the 17th December 2011, a massive stroke hit Tunisia's political landscape. Europe and the rest of the world started being aware of the political and social injustices in the North African country. News quickly spread through international TV newscasts and journals, but also eluded Tunisia's governmental censorship throughout Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Pictures of manifestations and riots in Tunis were published and after Ben Ali's ouster on January 14th 2011, the first oppressed North African country had broken its chains and paved the way to establish a democratic system, after years of corruption, high unemployment and the lack of fundamental human rights. A first reaction to the collapse of the Tunisian regime was a considerable amount of emigrants seeking for work in Europe. The Revolutionary spirit quickly spread to other North African states. Soon an overthrow of the Egyptian government followed and similar movements can now be seen in Syria, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain and further Arab countries. The revolution fuelled a lot of hopes and fears for the future. Tunisia is now on a good way to build up a new democratic government and the first free elections in the country's History were held on October 23rd. #
