Book excerpt: Considerable attention has been given to the current growth of the Hispanic population in the U.S. and subsequent impact on the educational system in our country. The administration at the University of Arkansas acknowledges the need and value of diversifying the student body. This research project examines one element of academic success for Hispanic students in institutions of higher education describing their social and academic transition experiences. Through the use of observations and in-depth interviews with students, faculty, and staff, three factors emerged as important to the unique academic and social experiences of Hispanic students: adjustment to campus life, cultural identity, and cultural awareness. The strengthening cultural identity and growing cultural awareness experienced by the students in this research seem to positively correlate to their sense of belonging and prospect for academic achievement.
