His parents were Matthias Lehrman and Rosina Ernst. They emigrated in 1832 and settled first in Canton, Ohio and then in Allen County, Indiana. He married Dorothea Heckler in 1846 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They had seven children. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Indiana.
