He was a descendant of Jakob Hochstetler (or Hostetler) who was born ca. 1712 in Europe and immigrated to America with his wife and two small children. They arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 9 November 1738 and settled in Berks Co., Pennsylvania. Christian married Magdalena Hershberger 4 April 1852 in Middlebury, Indiana. They lived in Shelbyville, Illinois and were the parents of eight sons and one daughter. Descendants lived in Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Oregon, California and elsewhere.
