Book excerpt: Atmospheric turbulence can be very detrimental to the performance of imaging systems for surveillance over ranges of 1-30 kilometres at visible and infrared wavelengths. The objective of the work reported was to investigate the state of the art in passive techniques that might be used to mitigate atmospheric turbulence effects in imagery along the horizontal and along slant. The possibility of using image compensation techniques with an active range-gated imager was also considered. The imaging problem is first discussed with regard to imaging requirements, atmospheric turbulence, image formation, anisoplanatism, and depth of field. Post-detection image restoration and adaptive optics are then examined as techniques to improve imaging in the atmospheric boundary layer. Measures of performance relevant to image quality are reviewed and the performance of the various image compensation techniques is assessed. Recommendations for further research are made and a program of measurements is proposed in order to assess the potential of compensation methods for application to imaging.
