Book excerpt: There is growing evidence at the global level of the role that fisheries and social protection policies can jointly play in combating poverty and hunger, whilst simultaneously promoting sustainable natural resources management. The Coherence between social protection and fisheries policies Diagnostic Tool provides practical instruments for assessing the coherence between fisheries policies and social protection at country level. It helps to identify and map the scope and nature of links between fisheries policies and social protection interventions within selected countries, including supportive and constraining factors; and understand people’s experiences and perceptions of these links and how the links (or lack thereof) affect their livelihoods. The Diagnostic Tool provides the basis for identifying options for strengthening coherence, including the methodology and interview guides to be applied to country-specific contexts.
