The world record-holder for traversing the Appalachian Trail for both women and men, hikers and runners; and a 2011 National Geographic 'Adventurer of the Year'. MILLIE RAVENEL. Founder and Director Emeritus of The Center for International Understanding, and the recipient of the 2011 Governor's Award for Excellence and the Citizen of the World Award. KATHRYN STRIPLING BYER. Former North Carolina Poet Laureate for five years, inducted into the NC Literary Hall of Fame, multiple writing awards for books of poetry, Western North Carolina University faculty member.
