However, the church's misogynistic, patriarchal roots continue to create and sustain an environment that makes being a woman in ministry unnecessarily burdensome. Research confirms that most women in ministry experience some form of violence and oppression--from invisibility to subtle microaggressive speech-acts to sexual assault--as they navigate their ministry journeys. Psychologists, counselors, and pastoral care practitioners tell us that continuous encounters with violence and oppression eventually take a toll on the mind, body, and spirit. This thesis aims to link traditional conservative biblical interpretation steeped in sexism and often shared in the black church to the mistreatment of women in general and women in ministry specifically. Additionally, this project listens to the narratives of women who have experienced gender-based oppression in the church and develops a pedagogical, theological strategy to help allies embrace women in ministry?licensing them, mentoring them, ordaining them, and creating opportunities for them to thrive. Grounded in feminist and womanist thought and ethics, the project theorizes a pastoral theology for helping women in ministry find healing and wholeness"--Abstract.
