Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study was to examine the impact of growth and fixed mindset on test anxiety between junior high, high school, and undergraduate students. It was predicted that students with a growth mindset would report less test anxiety than students with a fixed mindset, high school students would report the most test anxiety of the three age groups, and females would report a fixed mindset and more test anxiety than males. Participants completed the Implicit Theories of Intelligence Scale to assess mindset and the Suinn Test Anxiety Behavior Scale to assess test anxiety. There were 301 valid participant responses (36 junior high students, 54 high school students, and 211 undergraduate students). The results of the study indicate no significant difference in test anxiety as a function of growth or fixed mindset. Subsequent analysis showed no significant difference in test anxiety between junior high, high school, and undergraduate students. Supplemental exploratory analysis demonstrated a significant difference between test anxiety and gender. Together, these findings suggest that mindset and age have little impact on test anxiety. Test anxiety continues to be prevalent across all age groups. Future research on other factors contributing to test anxiety is discussed and the significance of creating test anxiety intervention programs is explored.
