Book excerpt: Concerning a review that William Hazlitt would like to write in the Edinburgh Review of Wilson's book on Defoe; saying "Our friend Hazlitt means to do "Defoe" in the "Edinburgh", and requests me to acquaint you with his wish for a copy of the Book immediately - no matter what state it be in - that he may read, mark, and so on, for his article, which he is anxious to rid off & send as soon as possible for insertion in the next number. Your disposition to oblige him will serve yourself, for I assure you we never talk of you without expressions from him of kindness and good-will. If you write to your publishers on the subject desire that the copy may be delivered to me on my calling there, and, within an hour from the time I have it, I shall have the pleasure of seeing Hazlitt thrusting at the leaves. As respects my next desire do as you will. You know my love for honest Dan and I should like to show it for him, without ill-will towards you, in the Westminster. A copy for me at the same time, will set me immediately to work with a hearty disposition to do the book and the state some service - but I urge nothing : I shall not conceive offence if you decline the offer, if you incline to it I will speak to Bowring & the article shall go in. You perceive my present address - I hope it will be my last in this life - in the next I hope we shall find each other without trouble. Newington Green is, as you are well aware, a place of some account in the annals of Non.con - I reside in the house formerly occupied by Old Dr. Civil Liberty Price, when he was honoured by the visits of Ben Franklin, and not dishonored though he there received the calls of David Hume. About a month ago I was with Charles Lamb at Enfield, whom I found wretchedly morbid in the absence of his sister, during a lengthened aberration from whence he augured fearful things. Since then I hear she has returned but, as yet, they receive no visitors. In spite of our dreadful laughter, whence I did not recover for a week after you drove from C.L.'s door, you may perhaps conceive I have had some share of trouble. I assure you my measure of that article since we met has been heaped up and running over. I am only just recovering, what I have not however for many years, a quiet state of mind. With respectful regard to Mrs. Wilson and the kindest wishes for all good to you and yours;" adding, in a postscript, "Drop me a letter by return of post if you can. I write this in a shop in town."
