Book excerpt: This letter is dated 28 October, is addressed to William Straiten, and explains that the writer is not in a position to use his influence to secure patronage for Straiten, but enclosed a guinea to help him through the winter. The letter was closed with a red wax seal, which is broken and remains unidentified. This item is accompanied by a typescript transcription, and a letter dated 14 June 1880 from Adam Smith to Sir Redmond Barry offering the letter to the Public Library (now the State Library of Victoria), with a draft reply (from Barry) on the reverse. Smith notes that the letter came from his father, who added the year of the letter in pencil as 1825.
