Book excerpt: A singular creative exploration in images and words of traditions from the folklore of the island of Jersey, with a section describing these traditions. This book is also available in an extended edition, with project development notes, sketches and additional etchings. This edition lacks that additional material and is for those who would prefer not to be distracted from the poetry and their accompanying etchings and stories. The Island of Jersey lies 15 miles from France, in an angle between the Norman and Breton coasts called the 'Gulf of St. Malo'. It is an autonomous 'peculiar' of the British Crown and with the other Channel Islands, is the only surviving residue of the old Norman state that conquered England in 1066. It is the 'original' Jersey that gave its name to its various namesakes around the world (including those in the United States). The native language was Jèrriais, an ancient Norman dialect of the langue d'oil, but English is almost exclusively spoken now and has been the majority language since the 1920s and in the countryside since the early 1950s. The deep oral traditions of the Island developed over at least 1000 years in a deeply superstitious rural and seafaring community (with limited mercantile and industrial elements) and started to die out in the late 19th century, although a few folk tales are still known today in a handful of neighbourhoods. These etchings and poems explore the deeper psychological elements of these almost extinct traditions and the impact they might have had on earlier minds and on the implications for the undercurrents that pass through modern minds.
