Book excerpt: "The majority of the world's vineyards are based on grafted vines, with rootstocks primarily used to protect the susceptible grape cultivars of Vitis vinifera from soil-borne phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifoliae). While not specifically bred for growth control, rootstocks vary in their effects on the vegetative growth and yield of the scion. One reason for the differences in rootstock influence on the scion may be related to the suitability or adaptation of rootstock varieties to particular physiological characteristics associated with rootstocks that can directly control scion development. The research presented in this thesis was designed to provide a better understanding of the mchanisms underlying rootstock effects on grafted vine behaviour ... The overall objective of this study was to advance current understanding of the mechanisms by which rootstocks might modify grafted vine behaviour. Rootstocks were found to directly influence reproductive development of the scion, and biomass partitioning between the root system and above ground parts of the vine ...".
