Book excerpt: In response to the call for troops from the confederate states government on the 20th, April 1861 by J.E. Brown of Georgia, called into service the following military companies for 12 months service: Young Guards, Athens Guards, Dawson Greys, Home Guards, Governors Guards, Wilkerson Rifles, Brown Rifles, Confederate Light Guards, Caswell Guards, Dade Rifles, Burke Guards. These companies rendezvoused in Augusta Georgia in the last days of April, 1861. They were armed and equipped, and mustered into the service for 12 Months by Confederate States army officer Captain R.G Cole, and transported by rail to Portmouth, Virginia. On the 8th of May, 1861, the 3rd Georgia regiment was organized by the election of its field officers. The 3rd Georgia fought throughout the war in Virginia and surrendered at Appomattox.
