Book excerpt: This report presents the examination of historical trends and current experiences with high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) projects in six selected case study sites. HOV facilities in Houston, Texas; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Orange County, California; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Seattle, Washington; and Washington D.C./Northern Virginia are examined. In addition, available information on other HOV projects located on freeways or in separate rights-of--way is reviewed. The report presents one part of a three-year assessment of HOV projects in North America. The report includes an examination of historical information on utilization levels, operating characteristics, and impacts of the HOV projects.
