Developed by the Australian Agricultural Company (a private company) on the south side of the town the other section was was north of the river which the Governsment controlled. As a major center the town built a large gaol which housed many vivious criminals. Five ment were hanged within the walls, all for murder. Included in this group was a double execution. All but one was hanged by the state hangman Robert Rice Howard, known as 'Nosey Bob'.
