Book excerpt: Firedauber is a children's story. The book is based on the life of a horse that pulls a fire engine wagon in the village of Osterlitzin, Austria, in the early years of 1800. While Firedauber was young he always arrived first at fires, but as he grew older he pulled the wagon slower. One day he arrived late, allowing the fire to burn a family's home. The fire chief retires Firedauber to a mountain side pasture overlooking the village, and one night Firedauber sees a flicker of flame in the village; jumps the fence, wakes the fire chief, and together they race away once more to successfully subdue a fire Firedauber is awarded a retirement stall inside the fire station and lives happily ever after. The book is color illustrated.
