This final volume of the science-fiction trilogy is mostly concerned with the expectations, projections, and wishful thinking of a slowly dying man, Dr. Mir, both in the present and in the future. He is accompanied by his ever-faithful Genie, his beautiful (android) Swedish nurse, and ravishingly attractive Arab doctor, Halima Albari? whom he marries, and they have a son. She and Genie saved his life repeatedly, helped him to attain maximum possible contentment; but ultimately, they could not prolong his life. After he passed away, he was secretly cremated and his ashes were scattered in the gardens of the hospital where he was born.
