Book excerpt: The sixth symposium on "Dynamics in Small Confining Systems", held November 27-30 at the 2000 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, celebrated a decade of this series. The program of the symposium covered a broad range of topics related to static and dynamic properties of confining systems: probing of confined systems, structure and dynamics of liquids at interfaces, nanorheology and tribology, adsorption, diffusion in pores, polymers and membranes, dielectric relaxation and biological aspects. Participants from various disciplines shared different points of view on the questions of how ultra small geometries can force a system to behave in ways significantly different from its behavior in the bulk, how this difference affects molecular properties, and how it is probed. There appears to be a continuing interest in the dynamics and thermodynamics of confined molecular systems. This symposium was an effective way to bring together different disciplines interested in common problems.
