Book excerpt: The fourth symposium on 'Dynamics in Small Confining Systems, ' held as part of the 1996 MRS Fall Meeting, covered a broad range of topics related to static and dynamic properties of confining systems: probing of confined systems, structure and dynamics of liquids at interfaces, nanorheology and tribology, adsorption, diffusion in pores, and reactions. Participants from various disciplines shared different points of view on the questions of how ultrasmall geometries can force a system to behave in ways significantly different from its behavior in the bulk, how this difference affects molecular properties, and how it is probed. There appears to be a continuing interest in the dynamics and thermodynamics of confined molecular systems. The symposium was an effective way to bring together different disciplines interested in. The contributions in the book reflect the broad range of topics discussed at the meeting, all related to dynamics in small confining systems. The papers appear in the book in the order of their presentation during the symposium.
