Is there a tension between competition and integration which may both be considered important goals of the Community's members? This issue has acquired increasing significance over the years and it has recently been discussed in the light of Merger Control Regulation. Whether other factors such as industrial policy may determine the Community's competition policy is one of the central themes of this study by Rosita B. Bouterse. There is no general consensus on this issue among the Community Members. The author regards the question from both a theoretical and a practical perspective, leading up to the final chapter which is a synthesis between the theoretical chapters and the case studies which follow them. This book has been based upon the author's doctorate thesis upon which she received her doctor's degree at the European University Institute, Florence Italy.
