Book excerpt: Over the course of the years following defeat in World War II, Japan's armed forces have been transformed from the militarist clique that lost the war and destroyed the country into an accepted instrument of Japanese foreign and domestic policy My purpose in this thesis is to examine Japanese civil-military relations by tracing why and how Japan has successfully subordinated its armed forces to the civilian government and rehabilitated them into a domestically acceptable tool of the state.
