Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central District Bituminous Coals as Water-Gas Generator Fuel Uncarbureted water gas (blue gas) consists chiefly of hydrogen (h2), carbon monoxide (co), and carbon dioxide (002) when high carbon, low-volatile fuels, such as coke or anthracite coal, are used. It is formed by passing steam (hzo) through an incandescent bed of fuel. The amount and composition of gas formed per unit of time depend upon the nature of the fuel, the rate at which the steam passes through the fuel, and the temperature of the fuel at the time the process is taking place. The chemical reactions occurring under varying conditions have been studied by a number of investigators, and the results of these studies will be summarized here to assist those readers that may not have these principles clearly in mind. The following chemical equations Show the principal reactions taking place in a water-gas generator during the steaming period or run. After each equation, the heating value per cubic foot (corrected to standard conditions) of the total gas formed in the reaction is given.
