Book excerpt: The legendary conference held in 1933 on the topic of the 'functional city' by the Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM, 1928-1959) was the fourth of the organization's 11 meetings. In reports specially prepared for the congress, 34 cities were recorded cartographically using a predefined scheme to allow comparative analysis. The Atlas of the Functional City brings together all of the surviving materials of the conference for the first time, presenting them systematically and placing them in an international urban planning context.
