Book excerpt: Setup time of components in a printed circuit board (PCB) assembly machine consumes a large portion of the total production time in any PCB manufacturing system. The assembly sequence for printed circuit boards has been proved to effect the number of component switches to a great extent. This work addresses the problem of reducing the setup time for PCB assembly by proposing a new method for grouping PCBs based on similarity of components. A new heuristic approach based on the principles of greedy algorithm for sequencing PCBs to minimize the number of component switches is also proposed. The grouping and sequencing strategy performs better than the existing grouping methods to minimize setup time. Genetic algorithms (GA) have been used for finding PCB sequences to minimize setup time. A GA based assembly model to minimize the total number of component changeovers in a feeder rack is implemented for single and multiple line production environments. The GA based assembly model for minimizing setup time performs better than existing grouping and sequencing methods. Determining PCB assembly sequences for minimizing the total production cost of a batch of PCBs for a multiple line assembly system has also been studied. A GA based application to decide PCB machine layout minimizing the total setup time for machines in a multiple line production environment has also been proposed.
