It is with no little hesitation that he attempts the difficult task of conveying by printed words that which requires the living voice for its proper exemplification. It is impossible to prescribe an inflexible course of instruction. - one which will not require the ingenuity of the teacher to adapt it to individual cases. Nevertheless, even an imperfect outline - and this assumes to be nothing more - will serve as a guide to those who wish to adopt, to any extent, this mode of training. For the faults and imperfections in these pages the writer is alone responsible: and he would not claim an undue share of credit for anything of worth which the work may contain. He has availed himself of the labors of the numerous investigators who have preceded him in these fields.
