Life equaled loss, and the family suffered the loss of a family member in the war with stoic strength. She watched her mother become so depressed that she contemplated suicide as the only way to escape her misery. Grace endured sexual harassment in dead-end jobs; eventually, she met her future husband and escaped to Canada to an unknown future.
