Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Officers and Students of Boston College for the Academic Year 1880-81 To the original classical course was added, September, 1879, at the special instance of the Most Reverend Archbishop, a depart ment in which the study of the ancient languages is superseded by exclusive application to English, the modern languages and the sciences. This course is intended to offer the advantages of a thorough English and business education to that large class of our youth who, not intending to follow the professions, stand in no immediate need of classical training but for whom it is of such vast importance that they be well grounded in their faith and spend a few years at least under healthy religious influence. For entrance into the classical department, a knowledge of thefundamental principles of Grammar and Arithmetic will suffice; for entrance into the English department, a complete knowledge of those two branches will be exacted. The terms are thirty dollars per session of five months, payable in advance; besides the fee of ten dollars for the diploma, there will be no further charges made by the college. The first session begins on the first Monday of September; the second, on the first Monday of February; but students are not precluded from entering at other times.
