Book excerpt: Classical music has been used as a tool for relaxation and stress reduction, resulting in self-reported physiological and behavioral changes that are related to stress reduction (Scheufele, 1999). In this study, a sample of adults (N=40) was used to determine if listening to classical music while completing an art task would result in a greater reduction of stress scores as oposed to completing an art task in silence. Participants were randomy assigned to two groups (n=20 for each), a music or no-music condition. The Psychological Stress Measure (PSM-9), a pre-post measure, was used to measure stress. It was anticipated that the participants who were exposed to classicl music while completing an art task would report greater reduction in stress scores than participants who had completed the art task in the absence of classical music. While the hypothesis was not supported, results showed a statistically significant reduction of stress for both conditions, indicating that the art-making may have been the primary stress reducer.
