Book excerpt: On the cusp of his First Night, a young man travels to a nearby village to settle his father's debt. Excited to be given a man's responsibility, young Jan celebrates his independence with some boys of the village, drinking strong wine and telling stories about the Beckoning, which gives life to the dead and fills them with an irresistible allure. In the morning, Jan sets out to return home, but exhausted from the previous night's revelry, he stops to take an ill-fated nap. When he wakes, the sun has set, and he can already feel the seductive pull of the Beckoning. Desperate and afraid, Jan finds shelter in a tree as the seductive and deadly nohetka fall upon him. He Lashes himself to the tree as the Beckoning overwhelms his senses. He must endure his First Night without the protective power of wards and runes, and if he survives, he will be a man. But this night will forever change him and set him on a collision course with the very being who is the source of the terrifying Beckoning. The choices Jan makes will either pull the world from the brink of destruction, or send it over the edge.
