She has neither married or found a job to which she can dedicate all of her energy; although she does work, she feels that the tasks to which she is set are generally beneath her capabilities. In Jane and Prudence, Jane tries to set Prudence up with Fabian Driver, a widower who lives in Jane's parish. The matchmaking goes awry, but in the process, Prudence learns that her life, which cannot be so neatly categorized into one role as can Jane's, may be all the more fulfilling for that very reason.
