In this process, magnesium nitrate fluxing agent is used to form insoluble cerium oxide which is then separated from the rare earth nitrates by filtration. The results of the study show that the process is possible, although the product purity is low. For a reaction of 1 hr at 260 deg C, 94% of the cerium was recovered as CeO/sub 2/ of 77% purity, and the effects of higher and lower temperature on the purity were studied. (D.L.C.).
