Book excerpt: Founded in 1904, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is incorporated in the District of Columbia with its corporate headquarters located in Arlington, Virginia. The Society is managed by a Board of Directors comprising elected and ex officio members representing the active duty and retired communities of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The mission of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is to provide, in partnership with the Navy and Marine Corps, financial, educational, and other assistance to members of the Naval Services of the United States, eligible family members, and survivors when in need; and to receive and manage funds to administer these programs. The Society accomplishes this mission principally through the disbursement of interest-free loans and grants, but it also provides visiting nurse services, budget counseling services, and infant layettes, and administers food lockers and thrift shops. The Society also provides scholarships and interest-free loans for educational purposes through its education programs. Sponsored by the Department of the Navy, the Society operates more than 250 offices ashore and afloat at Navy and Marine Corps bases throughout the world.
