Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the State Normal School for Women, Vol. 7: Farmville, Virginia; June, 1921; Catalogue, 1921-1922 The Virginia Normal School Board invites careful attention to the following resolutions which were adopted by the Board April 12, 1919, and which are of very great importance to the future development of the Normal Schools. Resolved, That the most fundamental work of the State Normal Schools and their most important function is to train teachers for the elementary schools. Ample provision must be made for this training and proper facilities therefor must be provided before any of the appropriation from the State or revenues from the schools can be used for any other purposes. Be it further resolved, That the increased demand in the State for teachers of high school subjects, for teachers in special departments and for rural supervisors should be met by the State Normal Schools as far as possible without interfering with their primary function. Resolved, That in order to avoid unnecessary duplication of effort and to contribute to the most economic use of public funds, the work of training high school and special teachers and rural supervisors is hereby arranged in accordance with a plan of differentiation of work which will make it unnecessary for each one of the State Normal Schools to carry the heavy burden of a large number of special courses paralleling similar courses in other schools. The work common to all of the schools will be as follows: 1. Two-year courses for the training of elementary teachers.
