Book excerpt: Biogeomorphology is concerned with the influence of landforms on the distribution and development of plants, animals and mico-organisms; and with the influence of plants, animals and micro-organisms on earth surface processes and the development of landforms. In most situations these influences are interdependent with respect to environmental equilibrium or change. This volume of new essays considers a wide range of biological influences in geomorphology. It is divided according to particular geographical area and climatic criteria. The first part of the work is concerned with organic influences on landforms in temperate fluvial environments. Part two presents evidence from tropical, arid and periglacial environments. Part three deals with coastal and karst environments. Thi sis the first book on this important interdisciplinary field. It will be of considerable interest to geomorphologists, geologists and biologists, as well as to those involved in environmental planning and in using or monitoring the effects of plants and animals on the surface of the earth.
