Book excerpt: From its first beginnings of the Boston Latin School in 1635, the educational process has become more complex. A necessity for direction, controls, and management has developed. Educational administration had its beginnings prior to the twentieth century in Buffalo, New York in 1837. By 1920, enough literature had been written about educational administration to then call it a discipline in its own right. Methods of educational administration traditionally have drawn extensively from the techniques of management methods used in business industry. Other contributing factors to the development of educational administration include the rapid growth of school districts, the expansion of the United States, and the industrial revolution. Skills taken from the business world and incorporated into the realm of educational administration include those relative to the areas of finance, planning, personnel and transportation and facilities management.
