Being very poor, he frequently had to travel on foot, and dine and sleep with the poor, and knowing familiarly the various low patois, he mixed with the peasantry, and was able to talk with them. In the Spanish peasantry he found, what he had often sought, but not hitherto found, truth, brotherly kindness, chivalrous devotion, true nobleness of character, religion without cant, and every virtue - mixed with a little dirt.
