Charles Wright Barclay, compiler of Part I of this History, died in 1926, having dealt with the Gloucestershire section. He laid upon me the duty of con tinning his work. Sources of information unknown to previous genealogists have become available in recent years, necessitating a careful examination of the mass of material covering a period of eight centuries. I have been fortunate in obtaining the co-operation of Miss M. E. Simkins of the Victoria History, whose masterly research I most gratefully acknow ledge.
